BreakOut! Fighting the Criminalization of LGBTQ Youth in New Orleans, LA ›
“BreakOUT! organizes LGBTQ youth ages 13-24 who are most impacted by the criminal justice system through weekly “Building Our Power” meetings. In the first section, youth build off of knowledge and experiences they already have through a curriculum that includes workshops on LGBTQ Radical History, Gendered Police Repression and History of the Prison Industrial Complex, Racism and Oppression 101, and other social justice issues that affect their daily lives.
Once youth complete the first part of the “Building Our Power” series, they learn ways to confront these issues in their lives by further developing their organizing skills, including learning about Campaign Development, Base Building, Power Mapping, Developing and Implementing Strategies, and more. The curriculum is flexible depending on youth’s interests and campaign progress.”
OMFG. YES.
