Many find that compassion comes more easily toward the suffering of others than toward that of the self. Although it is a noble and wise experience to care for the suffering and pain of others, our caring will not end our suffering, or theirs. The end of suffering will come only when we meet our own pain with compassion. When we are committed to the path of nonharming, when we are living in harmony with the principles we wish to see in the world, then our compassion will be genuine, grounded in the true potential for freedom rather than in a deluded wish for pain to go away.
